The latest opinion survey conducted by Hong Kong Public Opinion Research Institute (HKPORI) shows that both the Public Sentiment Index (PSI) towards the government, and the Chief Executive's rating have plummeted to record lows - the most shocking routing of public support for the current government, as shown here:
What is worse, the CE rating has for the first time on record severely overshot negative views the public holds for the government at large (red shade above), and exploding to record highs in the space of a few weeks. The current CE, widely viewed as more competent and capable of reconciling the directions of Beijing to wishes of HK people, scored even more poorly compared to the hugely unpopular but nevertheless belligerent former CE Mr CY Leung.
What this suggests is that either Mrs Carrie Lam has gone mad, or she is hostage to decisions that she would not make under the decades of civil service training she has benefited from.
Any technical further breach below of either or both the readings on PSI and CE ratings would suggest civil unrest ahead. HK is truly in uncharted territory.
